    Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival 2009#1

The evening sky of oldtown Tokyo is brightly colored with several tens of thousands of fireworks.

    Date: 7/31 , 2010 19:05 start
(held in case of light rain but postponed if the weather is bad)
    Place:
Venue No.1: from downstream of Sakurabashi Bridge to upstream of Kototoibashi Bridge
Venue No.2: from downstream of Komagatabashi Bridge to upstream of Umayabashi Bridge
    City:Taito-ku and Sumida-ku, Tokyo

One of the major fireworks displays of Tokyo. On the last Saturday of July, the oldtown evening sky turns into a spectacle of dazzling colors from several tens of thousands of fireworks. This annual event is said to have originated in the custom of the common people of Edo viewing fireworks while enjoying the cool of the summer evening. According to other explanations, its roots are said to lie in the Suijin Festival dedicated to the water deity held to appease the souls of those who had died of starvation or of plague and to drive away pestilence during the reign of Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth Tokugawa Shogun (1684-1751). In the late Edo period, the festival was called Ryogoku Kawarabiraki and attracted many Edo townspeople. Traditional shouts of “Kagiya!” and “Tamaya!” voiced when the fireworks are set off, originate in Ryogoku Kawarabiraki when spectators yelled out the names of the leading fireworks manufacturers (Kagiya and Tamaya) at the time. The festival survived the Meiji Restoration, and in the latter half of the 19th Century (Meiji – Taisho – early Showa eras), it was held almost every year. Although suspended because of too much traffic or too many buildings in the neighborhood, from 1978 onwards it was revived under a new name, Sumidagawa Hanabi Taikai (Sumida River Fireworks Display). This has now taken root as one of the delightful scenes of the summer season in Tokyo.

Good spots for viewing the fireworks display are along the Sumida River which flows through the eastern part of Tokyo and empties into Tokyo Bay. In particular, the neighborhood around Asakusa Station throngs with crowds of spectators. It used to be held near the Ryogokubashi Bridge, but today, it has been moved upstream. Venue No.1 covers the area from downstream of Sakurabashi Bridge to upstream of Kototoibashi Bridge while Venue No.2 is located from downstream of Komagatabashi Bridge to upstream of Umayabashi Bridge. Because the river is narrow and has a river terrace, with buildings huddled together close by, only fireworks of a maximum of one gosundama (about 15 cm in diameter) are permitted. Yet fireworks seen from the spaces between tall buildings are really quite breathtaking.

Meiji Shrine, located in Shibuya, Tokyo, is the Shinto shrine that is dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken. When Emperor Meiji died in 1912 and Empress Shōken in 1914, the Japanese people wished to pay their respects to the two influential Japanese figures.

Sometime, you can come across Japanese traditional wedding ceremony at Meiji Shrine. If you want to see Japanese traditional wedding ceremony at Meiji Shrine, you should go there on Saturday or Sunday.

      [history]

After the emperor’s death in 1912, the Japanese Diet passed a resolution to commemorate his role in the Meiji Restoration. An iris garden in an area of Tokyo where Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken had been known to visit was chosen as the building’s location.

Construction began in 1915, and the shrine was built in the traditional Nagarezukuri style and is made up primarily of Japanese cypress and copper. It was formally dedicated in 1920, completed in 1921, and its grounds officially finished by 1926. Until 1946, the Meiji Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
The original building was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of World War II. The present iteration of the shrine was funded through a public fund raising effort and completed in October, 1958.
Meiji Shrine was brought into the flow of current events with the 2009 visit of United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. After arriving in Tokyo on her first foreign trip representing the newly elected President Barack Obama, she made her way to this shrine in advance of meetings with Japan’s leaders to show her “respect toward history and the culture of Japan.”
In January 2010, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle demonstrated the same respect when he concluded his visit to Japan with a visit of the shrine.

Odaiba is Tokyo’s new amusement park, especially near Fuji Television’s building is very popular area for young people.

Odaiba was born from reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay in the southeastern part of Tokyo. It attracts mostly young people as a new amusement spot in the city. The name Odaiba means a “platform site.” It derives its name from the installation of a platform for a marine cannon battery that was constructed in haste to meet the sudden need for the defense of Tokyo (called Edo at that time) after the unexpected appearance of the black steel ships from the United States in 1853 commanded by Commodore Perry.

The center of Odaiba is Aquacity Odaiba. It includes a shopping mall with a 300-meter-long boutique street, a multi-flex cinema that employs the latest acoustic and screen technologies, and a gourmet zone that stretches over 15,000 square meters, which is obviously the largest such zone in Japan.

Major attractions of Odaiba are dotted along the Yurikamome Line, a new unmanned traffic system that crosses Rainbow Bridge to connect Shimbashi Station with Odaiba. Attractions include the Odaiba Seaside Park that overlooks Rainbow Bridge, Fuji TV headquarters and studios where visitors can see the sets of popular TV programs, and Palette Town, a “theme park for women” with an interior modeled after a European city in the 18th century, and which accommodates over 150 shops. All of these and many other vie against each other in one location.
